The lovely Sofie of Sewfie discusses her business, background and answers the marmite question!

What does ‘Sewfie’ offer?

An array of handmade delicacies, and the friendliest approach to learning to crochet around. Sewfie’s ethos is to be as socially and environmentally responsible as possible, so literally everything I use, from the zips to the yarn, are organic (as many as possible are fair trade, too!), and I give 15% of my profits to a charity that deals with the rehabilitation of child trafficking victims. Both of these things together are the perfect way to alleviate that niggling guilt you feel when buying nice things for yourself!

What did you do before Sewfie?

I was studying physics at University and teaching piano to fund myself through! It’s a long boring story but it all got too much and I decided to leave, and shortly after, Sewfie was born! I’ve never once looked back.

What is the best business advice you had ever been given?

‘It’s going to be really hard’ … it keeps me focused – when things are going slowly or something’s not happening how I thought it would, I just go back to that and stick it out. No one said it would be easy!

Which businesses or people inspire you?

Oh gawd, I don’t know where to start… I think I find the most inspiration in the people who can laugh in the face of something difficult. The perfect business example of this is Paul Clarke, who set up The Trolls Pantry (a gourmet burger van in Brighton) using up all of his savings, during the recession, had to figure it all out from scratch, but a year on and The Trolls Pantry is now the 6th most recommended restaurant in Brighton on TripAdvisor…and it’s not even a restaurant!!

What is your greatest challenge in business?

Not having any business training!! Whenever I figure out how to do something new I feel as though I’ve re-invented the wheel, it’s all such an effort! It’s getting gradually easier but I would definitely recommend going on a short business course before getting seriously into your business venture…

What is the single most popular/successful marketing activity that you have done for Sewfie?

It’s got to be the Sewfie Facebook page. I have been so lucky with my likers, they’re so supportive of my little business… We have a symbiotic relationship, they perk me up when am feeling a little bogged down, and from the positive feedback from the Learn to Crochet Kits, I think they love what I do too. All together now.. ‘awww!’

Marmite, love or hate?

LOVE. Nuff said!

How do you take your tea?
